TekTok: Every US federal agency now required to have a Chief AI Officer

In a landmark move to harmonize innovation with integrity, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has issued its first government-wide policy to mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) while harnessing its benefits. This policy, a core component of President Biden’s landmark AI Executive Order, directs federal agencies to address AI risks, promote innovation, and manage AI usage responsibly. Chief AI Officers (CAIOs) will play a pivotal role in coordinating AI adoption within agencies , ensuring transparency, and safeguarding public rights and safety. By December 1, 2024, agencies must implement concrete safeguards when using AI, covering areas such as health, education, employment, and housing. The goal: to lead the way in responsible AI innovation while protecting citizens.

Good news, UVA is ahead of the game and has a university-wide task force looking at AI, and our own Advancement AI Task Force delivered their report at a session at the Week of Learning. We'll be adding a new section on the Advancement Hub about AI soon. Look for an update before Collaboration Day.
